rules In this experiment (Wallis, Anderson & Miller, 2001), illustrated in Figure 21, monkeys were trained to switch between two rules: Match and Non-match. Monkeys saw a sample picture followed by a delay and then a single test picture. For the match rule, the monkeys were given a reward if they released a lever when the pictures were the same, and held it if pictures were different. For the non-match rule, the rule was reversed. The trained monkeys could perform the task the first time they saw a new set of pictures. I.e.: The behavior did not depend on fixed stimulus-response associations, but on an “understanding” of the underlying rule. Figure 21. Layout of experiment to show how abstract rules can be formed in the pre frontal cortex of monkey brains. Picture adopted from (Miller, 2003). Stimuli

A Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents
Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....
متن کاملImplementation of Cognitive Control for a Humanoid Robot
OF TALK Engineers have long used control systems utilizing models and feedback loops to control real-world systems. Limitations of modelbased control led to a generation of intelligent control techniques such as adaptive and fuzzy control. Human brain, on the other hand, is known to process a variety of inputs in parallel, ignore distractions to focus on the task in hand. This process, known as...
متن کاملFrequency Control of an Islanded Microgrid based on Intelligent Control of Demand Response using Fuzzy Logic and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Algorithm
Due to the increasing penetration of renewable energies in the power system, the frequency control problem has attracted more attention, while the traditional control methods are not capable of regulating the frequency and securing the stability of the system. In smart grids, demand response as the frequency control tool reduces the dependence on spinning reserve and high cost controllers. In a...
متن کاملSome Notes on the Control of Attention, its Modeling and Anticipatory Cognitive Computing
This paper is aimed at furthering discussions about the properties which computational cognitive models of attentional control should have if they are meant to be applied in interactive human-computer systems, namely for predicting human attention shifts across control levels. The paper discusses a number of issues of attentional control and implications that follow for computational modeling. ...
متن کاملAN OBSERVER-BASED INTELLIGENT DECENTRALIZED VARIABLE STRUCTURE CONTROLLER FOR NONLINEAR NON-CANONICAL NON-AFFINE LARGE SCALE SYSTEMS
In this paper, an observer based fuzzy adaptive controller (FAC) is designed fora class of large scale systems with non-canonical non-affine nonlinear subsystems. It isassumed that functions of the subsystems and the interactions among subsystems areunknown. By constructing a new class of state observer for each follower, the proposedconsensus control method solves the problem of unmeasured sta...
متن کاملHierarchical Functional Concepts for Knowledge Transfer among Reinforcement Learning Agents
This article introduces the notions of functional space and concept as a way of knowledge representation and abstraction for Reinforcement Learning agents. These definitions are used as a tool of knowledge transfer among agents. The agents are assumed to be heterogeneous; they have different state spaces but share a same dynamic, reward and action space. In other words, the agents are assumed t...
